Quality Used Vehicles - Guaranteed
For years, the used-car market stood in the shadow of the new-car trade. But now used cars outsell new cars at franchise dealerships.
This demand for used vehicles has prompted manufacturers, dealers, and auctions to offer vehicle certification programs. A "certified" vehicle guarantees consumers that the used vehicles they're considering have passed thorough inspections.
But, "certification" isn't a copyrighted term, so certification programs carry widely varying standards with different implications for each consumer. So, review a vehicle's certification program.
The certification checklist should cover major systems--brakes, steering, suspension, transmission, electrical system, air conditioning, and heating system. If the checklist includes checkpoints for ashtrays, cup holders, and the like, be leery of the vehicle and the dealer.
After reviewing the seller's checklist, conduct your own inspection of the vehicle. By comparing the checklist with your evaluation, you can make sure the vehicle is worth the price on the window without simply taking the seller's word for it.
Individual sellers' certification programs may be different, but most certified vehicles must:
- Meet mileage and age limits-often less than 50,000 miles and fewer than four model years old; and
- Pass an inspection ranging from 70 points to 130 points that checks for damage, tops off fluids, and replaces worn parts.
Once a vehicle is certified, the manufacturer typically extends the existing warranty or provides a 12-month/12,000-mile warranty.
You also should find out what's covered by the extended warranties and what recourse you'd have (if any) if a component of the inspection checklist proves defective. Consider taking the car to another mechanic before you buy it to get an unbiased and professional opinion about whether or not the vehicle deserves certification.
